If Mayor Bloomberg's goal is to bollix up the works at Ground Zero, he sure deserves an "A" for ... COME CLEAN, MIKE...
Bloomberg has even suggested that Larry Silverstein — who held the lease at the World Trade Center and is obligated to rebuild the property with insurance proceeds — be kicked off the site.
"I said from the beginning that the Liberty Bonds should be dedicated primarily to the site," Pataki said yesterday. "And I believe that that is still the case."
Even Sen. Hillary Clinton is taking issue with Mayor Mike's diversion plan, telling officials Monday: "It is necessary that the Silverstein organization be granted the $3.5 billion in Liberty Bond financing requested so that these efforts may continue without delay."
Maybe things are moving too fast for the mayor at Ground Zero? True, almost nothing's been done at the site since the towers came crashing down. But maybe Hizzoner wants to make sure that nothing is done there — ever.
It's bad enough that Pataki failed to focus sufficient attention on the work — or to assign a strong leader to ensure progress until these pages essentially embarrassed him into putting his own chief of staff in charge of daily operations.
Now, on the eve of the mayoral election, Hizzoner weighs in. And in a way clearly calculated to undermine even the little that's been accomplished so far.
What's more, Bloomberg offers not a word as to what, specifically, he wants to do at Ground Zero — or to why he's suddenly looking to slow things down, after having signed off on every single plan that's been adopted.
Mayor Mike and his point man, Doctoroff — who may have his own hidden agenda in all this — need to lay out a detailed blueprint for what they want at Ground Zero.
What buildings would they do away with, or use for other purposes? How much retail, housing, hotel space do they foresee — and where, exactly?
How is it all to be financed? How much of the Liberty Bonds would be used at Ground Zero? Where would the rest of the funding come from? And how, specifically, would they use the Liberty Bonds not allotted to Ground Zero?
But if he and his aides insist on making this late entry, the least they can do is to do so responsibly — by providing all the details, quickly and openly.
