BLOOMINGTON — Vincent J. Trosino Sr., second in command at State Farm Insurance Cos., will retire at the end of the year after 44 years with the Bloomington-based company.

Trosino, 65, serves as president, vice chairman and chief operating officer of State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. He's also vice chairman of the board of State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. and State Farm Life Insurance Co.

Ed Rust Jr., State Farm chairman and chief executive officer, will resume serving as company president when Trosino retires. Rust noted that Trosino's leadership, skills and insights had a profound, positive impact on the growth and success of the State Farm organization.

In anticipation of Trosino's retirement and leadership transition, Rust named three other vice chairmen in 2004. They will continue in their roles following Trosino's retirement. They include Michael Tipsord, vice chairman, treasurer and chief financial officer; Jim Rutrough, vice chairman and chief administrative officer; and Mike Davidson, vice chairman and chief agency/marketing officer.

Trosino, who could not be reached for comment Tuesday, graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and earned a graduate degree from Illinois State University, Normal. He began his State Farm career in Pennsylvania as a regional office trainee in 1962.

After a series of promotions at State Farm corporate headquarters and a regional office in California, he was elected regional vice president for State Farm's nine-state Northeastern region in 1981.

In 1987, Trosino was named executive vice president. He became chief operating office in 1991 and vice chairman in 1994. He has served as president for eight years.

Trosino served on the ISU Foundation Board for nine years and served as chairman for four years. He belongs to ISU's College of Arts and Sciences Hall of Fame. He also was chairman of the Children's Foundation of McLean County advisory board.

The insurance executive has served on the Brookings Institution's Board of Trustees since 1996. He joined the Insurance Information Institute Board in 2002 and has served on the board of Vulcan Materials Co. since 2003.

Trosino served eight years on the State of Illinois Judicial Inquiry Board and is a former member of the American Judicature Society. He is past chairman of the boards of the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, the Insurance Institute of America and the Insurance Institute for Applied Ethics.

He is a distinguished alumnus of Villanova's College of Arts and Sciences. Five years ago, he received the Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Humanitarian of the Year Award.
