We have no choice but to say farewell to the State Fair of Texas. I wish we could keep up the mom... Letters for Tuesday...
I grew up six blocks from Fair Park and watched the fair change from the segregation of my mother's youth to today's international flavor. The fair is a glimpse at Dallas' potential as a city.
Where else can you do the chicken dance, electric slide and salsa all under one roof? Most of all, the fair is where you can see beautiful children of every race, children who deserve a Dallas that is tolerant, teaching and totally focused on their future.
On national TV Sunday, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said she hoped "that if there is going to be an indictment (in the Valerie Plame case) that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality where they couldn't indict on the crime ..."
When did she change her mind? During the Bill Clinton impeachment hearings in 1999, she said, "The reason that I voted to remove him from office is because ... the overriding issue here is that truth will remain the standard for perjury and obstruction of justice ... and it must not be gray. It must not be muddy."
Sounds like the kind of morally relativistic flip-flop she would associate with "liberal Democrats." Or is perjury OK as long as your side is the one lying?
I would hope that a district judge who believed an injustice had been done would do something about it. It is his duty. The worst case here is that justice may be delayed. Would that not be better than to have an innocent woman in prison awaiting appeal?
Re: "U.S., Britain calling for action against Syria - Damascus insists U.N. report implicating it in assassination is flawed," Monday news story.
The insurgency won't stop, even if George Bush has his way and invades Syria and Iran. We invaded a sovereign nation and are on the march to force "democracy" on the entire Middle East. This is sheer madness.
We don't even have enough troops in Iraq, and every day that country turns closer to civil war. We are in the same quagmire in Iraq that we were in during Vietnam, and, as in Vietnam, we do not hold our leaders responsible. Will it take a draft for America to say enough is enough?
We have spent $359 billion on Mr. Bush's war and will soon reach 2,000 dead soldiers, not to mention 13,000 injured. How many more wars will our 19-year-olds have to fight for the neocons' scorched-earth doctrine?
We are supposed to be a law-abiding society. Texas law requires drivers to have auto insurance, but the state estimates that 20 percent of us lack the required coverage.
Irving, Arlington, DeSoto, Haltom City and Mesquite have programs to tow an uninsured driver's automobile when discovered during a normal traffic stop. This would seem to be a good program to remove lawbreakers from the roads and protect everyone else.
For over two years, I visited many churches and often found worship services with a large elderly population and many empty pews and parking spaces. I felt neither welcomed nor comfortable. Traditional Christianity started to become irrelevant to me.
In January, I started attending a class with the Conversations With God Center of Dallas. I was greeted with open arms and acceptance. I love it! The center has grown tremendously, and I have found a new spirituality with meaning and relevance.
It saddened me to read that some area schools are seriously considering moving Friday night high school football to Saturdays. Let's not let a handful of hoodlums who start fights put an end to a great tradition.
This recent trouble involves only a small number of schools, and the trouble has occurred far from the stadiums and off school property. Bad elements always seek venues for their malicious behavior, and moving football games will not end it.
Perhaps those few schools with perpetual rivalry problems and security "issues" should end their football programs altogether, rather than penalize the vast majority of schools that have no problems with Friday night games.
