Military life insurance programs were developed to provide insurance benefits for veterans and service members of the army who may not be able to get insurance from private companies because of the extra risks involved in military service, or a service connected disability.

Although every country has got its own military life insurance regulation everyone knows that it’s impossible to put a price tag on the peace of mind Service members’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) provides military men and women and their families. But it was possible to reduce the out-of-pocket expenses of these heroes.
In USA for example, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reduced SGLI premiums in July 2003. Ninety-eight percent of active duty and 96 percent of eligible reservists hold SGLI policies.
The new military life insurance monthly rate is 6.5 cents for every u$1,000 of coverage, about 19 percent less than the previous 8 cents. The maximum coverage of u$250,000 of monthly premiums fell to u$16.25 from u$20.
Those military life insurance reductions saved service members about $96 million annually in basic SGLI premiums and about $42 million in family policy premiums.
The reductions did not affect Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) rates, which VA reduced 3 times in the last four years. Service members become eligible for VGLI only after they leave the military.
