On the same day that the House of Representatives passed a bill that cuts funding for Medicaid, food stamps and college student aid, it raised funding for another constituency: itself.

The pay increase was part of a larger spending bill that focused on transportation and housing. The House passed it 392-31. The Senate doesn't get off the hook, either. It then passed the bill on a voice vote.

Occasionally, there are members of Congress who decry the pay raise and even more who send their annual raise back to the government. But the juxtaposition of the House voting to add to the burden of some of the people who need the help most desperately while, on the same day, making themselves richer is galling.

While members of Congress have a health insurance plan that most of America can only dream about, the elderly and disabled who rely on Medicaid will be asked to pay more.
