Meanwhile, all the Hondas CR tested are reliable, and most have smooth, refined engines and transmissions, good fuel economy, handling, fit and finish, and crash-test scores. CR recommends 100 percent of the tested models from Honda and its upscale brand, Acura. Other automakers with high-recommendation rates included Subaru (100 percent of tested models), Toyota (85 percent) and Mazda (73 percent).
Still, no carmaker does everything right. Although all the Honda models tested by Consumer Reports got a nod, most suffer from excessive road noise. And despite very good reliability scores, not all Toyota models do well in CR's tests. And while Volkswagen builds vehicles (including Audis) that perform with precision, few have decent reliability.
CR believes consumers should focus on buying the best car for their needs, no matter who builds it. The automakers that typically do best in CR's ratings of new cars tend to produce well-rounded vehicles that appeal to a broad audience. U.S. automakers build some good models, but more are mediocre, and even the best seldom rise to the top of their categories.
