The fee for a new tap hook-up in Little Washington was previously $1,000, but this number was low compared to surrounding towns. Culpeper has charged new tap hookups $5,000 for several years. The interim tap fee approved by the council on Wednesday is meant to cover the town's cost of installing the new tap as well as represent the new water user's share of the cost of maintaining town water. A more precise calculation of those numbers will be used by the Town Planning commission for their recommendation of a permanent tap fee to the town council.
The interim fee will be applied to new tap requests for single family homes and in the town limits who don't place unusual requirements on the town water supply. It was Sid Worley's tap request, filed a month ago, that finally prompted the Town Council to adjust the fee, which had been tabled for further discussion on two previous occasions. Because Worley's request was filed prior to the fee change, he will be the last applicant to pay the older, cheaper rate.
The council granted Beverly and John Sullivan of Flint Hill a special use permit for their cabin on 132 Gay St,allowing them to rent the small house to guests. Subject to the Sullivan's getting approval from the Virginia Department of Health and VDOT, the cabin will be operated as a kind of miniature bed & breakfast, possibly under the stewardship of the nearby Middleton Inn.
After extensive termite damage was discovered in Avon Hall in addition to the previous water damage, repairs to the building are expected to cost the full $75,000 that Washington received in an insurance payout for Avon Hall's bad flooding. Claudia Mitchell will serve as the town's representative to Peter Kreyling, who will be performing the repairs.
